From the Board of Trustees

Specialised middle schools, such as Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School, recognise that emerging adolescence is a unique stage of development, worthy of recognition in its own right and deserving of special educational provisions.

At Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School we build upon the work of the Contributing School in advancing your child's literacy and numeracy skills to enhance their intellectual development. Part of our role is to prepare the student for their secondary years by providing the knowledge, attitude and skills which enable them to learn for themselves - to become independent learners.

The pre-adolescent years are years of great physical, intellectual and social development and at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School we aim to provide the opportunity for students to sample a wide range of academic, sporting and cultural activities.

Features of this school include:

  • A strong academic focus with students challenged to achieve their best
  • The celebration and acknowledgement of student achievement across all areas of learning.
  • The '5 Keys to School Success' - an approach to schooling that has as its goal for all students to realise their potential and to achieve to the best of their ability
  • A staff that understand and are committed to meeting the needs of the emerging adolescent
  • Specialised facilities and teachers in Technology, Music and Visual Art
  • Challenge and opportunity through a diverse range of academic, cultural, sporting, extension and enrichment opportunities.

We ask that you encourage your sons and daughters to make the most of their years at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School and take a full part in the life of their school. Often new activities at Intermediate School become life-long pursuits and provide the stimulus for a special interest in specific learning areas.

We are keen to have parents' involvement in the school. There are a whole range of ways in which you can contribute; as a camp parent, coaching sports teams, helping in the library, or with our many extra curricular programmes, to name a few.

We are confident that with your support and your children's active involvement in the learning programmes we provide, the two years at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School will provide a sound platform for their Secondary Schooling and years beyond.
